Club Descriptions

Chess Club

The Chess Club gives students an opportunity to play friendly games of chess against their peers in a low-stress environment. Students of all levels are welcome to come, as help is given to those who need it. Chess Club also offers chess quizzes, chess puzzles and problems, sometimes with a prize for the winner!


Acapella Choir

The a cappella group is made up of singers for the purpose of creating several voices to sound as one, mostly without instrumental accompaniment. The voices will range from soprano, alto, baritone and bass. Students will learn to harmonize with others while maintain a consistent pitch/key. Prerequisite; students must be able to sing on key. The first meeting will begin with a simple audition. You are welcomed to come with a prepared piece but is not necessary.

Comic Club

Comic book club is designed to be a forum for reading, discussing, and creating comics while examining popular titles and characters.


Environmental Club

HCAM’s environmental club is a club dedicated to the education and fulfillment of a more environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing HCAM. We will be actively involved in “green” issues on campus; as well as, helping maintain the grounds of HCAM. We will participate in several gardening, landscaping, and eco-friendly activities on campus. Issues and activities will include helping to implement a recycling program at HCAM, maintaining the flower beds on campus (with approval), working with sustainable gardening practices, and evaluating current green practices in a hands on manner.


GSA (Gay Straight Alliance)

Gay Straight Alliance(GSA) is a network of students who work together to break down

stereotypes that have been placed on the LGBTQ community. GSA welcomes students of any orientation to participate in things such as t-shirt design, fundraisers, National Day of Silence, and other school activities. Meetings are a place for students to share and build alliances with other students of any orientation. Come help us break down barriers and build a more accepting community at HCAM!!

Journalism

The Journalism Club at HCAM is focused on sharing current events, human interest articles, and various opinion pieces with the community. Students will participate in all aspects of the journalism process from the collection of material to writing articles, copy editing, and publishing pieces. It is our goal to present our content in creative ways using both print and digital media.


Spanish Club

The Spanish Club offers HCAM students wonderful opportunities to celebrate the linguistic and cultural contributions of the Spanish-speaking community. The Spanish club is a great way to meet other students interested in Spanish-speaking countries, cultures, history, film, and literature. The club organizes numerous activities throughout the academic year and welcomes your participation. We would love for you to join us. All levels of Spanish are welcome.

Debate Club

The debate club is great place for students to explore the art of "organized arguing".

Students in debate club tend to enjoy discussing current issues and if they don't already have a strong voice and good presentation skills, they will learn these abilities in a fun, safe club environment. Students learn to create factual/logical, ethical and emotional arguments to persuade others in the club that their "side" is correct. The club uses the formal debate format. The goal is to compete in tournaments with middle and high school students. The club's purpose is to teach and train students in the fundamentals of debate, public speaking and essay writing.

Beta Club

The National Senior Beta Club recognizes academic achievement, encourages character and leadership development, and fosters social responsibility through school and community service projects. The club is open to all students based upon their academic performance, attendance, and behavior. An invitation and application are required. There is a $20 fee.


Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is an academic team sport where 15 members compete in 23 events ranging from traditional sciences to engineering and robotics. Team members will learn to work together and utilize their skills to solve problems, create and design machines, and explore the scientific world.


Student Government

The Hickory Career & Arts Student Government Association is a representative structure for students, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff, parents, and community for the benefit of the school and its students.

HCAM Student Government commits itself and challenges the student body to:

o Promote unity while respecting individuality and diversity

o Uphold a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff

o Build and maintain a tradition of excellence through innovation

o Embrace creativity

o Be simultaneously aware of the community in which we thrive, as well as the world in which we live
